I have a preceptor—an amazing mentor whom I’m lucky to have in charge of my training, a nurse I’m kind of tethered to—and I started by shadowing her through everything. But as the weeks have gone on—I’m a month in—I’ve been given more and more autonomy. Which comes with more pressure, of course. I do everything from providing meds and giving injections to taking care of people who are on ventilators or who have underlying conditions; I care for IV sites and do gastric tube feedings and hang different types of antibiotics and such. I help clean and bathe patients and address wound care; I monitor people’s blood-oxygen saturation.
All night long, you hear rapid-response codes and cardiac arrest codes being called; it’s pretty unnerving, and it wears on you. Lately they’ve started playing snippets of Alicia Keys singing “New York State of Mind” when somebody’s being released from the hospital after recovering, and it’s a very welcome change in the soundtrack.
