This reminds me of when my wife was first pregnant, and we were asked if we wanted the fetus tested for downs syndrome. The only real benefit (other than preparing for the eventuality) was to decide whether or not to abort the pregnancy. We would have had the baby either way, so we declined the test. What's the point?

I can guarantee that 99.99999% of people with downs would choose the life they've been given than no life at all. Of COURSE fetuses lack self awareness, as do babies. But those who mature to self-awareness will almost always be glad they were permitted to be born.
