I always show the empty breech and lack of magazine before I hand a gun to anyone, and I always insist on seeing that the breech is empty and no magazine is attached before I'll take a gun from anyone. This was drilled into me again and again and again as a soldier.Edit: added magazine to comment.

My buddy is a soldier and taught me this when he was teaching me some gun safety.. I just assumed it was how you were supposed to do it. Now every time he comes to show me his gun or a new accessory I feel like he's testing me when he hands me his gun.
