I do that with oil paint and what not, but with coloured pencils I guess it’s because I’m still learning as I go. I start off not really knowing how I’m going to do the fur and what not so I’ll just try things out as I go to see what makes it look most realistic and what not!  Shields and swords Starks shirt
I’m self taught as well so I don’t really have these steps all figured out in my head yet! Like in this drawing I still plan to go touch up a few spots and make more details on the hat.Did you follow any tutorial?

 I’m also currently trying to work on my colouring pencil skills/shading/fur but it’s way worse than this, LOL! I can’t even figure out how you get layers of hair like that. Does the medium or the quality of the pencils matter? (Also self taught here)Once said this to a guy who showed me a video of him shredding on guitar.
