A lifelong Queens resident and the daughter of Colombian immigrants, Ramos is also the chair of the Senate Labor Committee, and in that role, she’s found ways to advocate for everyone from street-food vendors to essential workers. On Tuesday, Vogue spoke to Ramos about the letter she sent to Governor Andrew Cuomo requesting that delivery workers be made eligible for vaccines; her love for her home borough; and what she sees as the main priority for Biden’s first 100 days.
Plaskett did not get that assignment then. Two years later, it was hers. New York has distinguished itself as something of an incubator for dynamic young members of Congress, from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Jamaal Bowman. But one of the state’s biggest changemakers is currently serving at a more local level. Since 2019, State Senator Jessica Ramos has represented New York’s District 13, which includes the Queens neighborhoods of Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and parts of Astoria and Woodside—many of which were hardest hit by COVID-19.
