So it’s no surprise that, when designing a line of rugs for The Rug Company, Rodarte once again looked homewards for inspiration. Titled “California Dreaming,” their collection features two fashionable floor mats: Daphne, an abstract pink, white, and black print, which keen fashionistas will recognize from their fall winter 2016 collection. A second rug, California Poppy, is adorned with the bright-red flora. Kate and Laura took inspiration for the motif from their mother’s artwork: she filled her canvases with cut-outs of the state flower in the 1970s. “The natural landscape of California has always been a huge inspiration in our work,” they told Vogue. “Growing up, we always admired the beautiful California poppies in bloom, and finding our mother’s artwork from the 70’s brought our inspiration full circle.”
The Golden State has always been a muse to Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy. They photographed their Spring 2021 collection in California’s hills, adorning the models with fanciful native blooms. In 2018, the sisters broke from NYFW tradition and hosted their Fall 2019 runway show in Los Angeles—a nod to their brand’s beginning, which was founded in 2005 over their Pasadena kitchen table. “The move West makes sense: Every single collection they’ve designed has referenced an aspect of California and its rich culture, from the wood paneling of their parents’ house to the redwood forests,” Vogue’s Steff Yotka wrote at the time. “In many ways, it’s surprising that the duo has waited over 10 years to produce an event on their home turf.”
