Plaskett did not get that assignment then. Two years later, it was hers. New York has distinguished itself as something of an incubator for dynamic young members of Congress, from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Jamaal Bowman. But one of the state’s biggest changemakers is currently serving at a more local level. Since 2019, State Senator Jessica Ramos has represented New York’s District 13, which includes the Queens neighborhoods of Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and parts of Astoria and Woodside—many of which were hardest hit by COVID-19.
In 2014, having moved to the Virgin Islands a few years earlier, Plaskett was elected to represent the U.S. territory in Congress as a nonvoting member. Plaskett sought to be part of the impeachment team in 2019, the first time Trump was impeached by the House, citing both her experience as a prosecutor and the significance it would bring to the U.S. territory in a letter she sent to Pelosi. She also pointed out to BuzzFeed News the relevance of her race in the role. “The party says that Black women are the base and our primary support, and there are five Black women in the House who are attorneys, and only two of us are former prosecutors,” Plaskett said.
