In sharp contrast, the Democratic prosecution team, led by Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, got off to a strong start. It began with that video that seemed to stun senators—“You could have heard a pin drop,” newly appointed California senator Alex Padilla said on MSNBC afterward—and then continued with an effective, well-paced presentation that carried moments of deep emotion.
The speech delivered by Raskin, who lost his 25-year-old son to suicide on New Year’s Eve, was particularly moving. Raskin broke down briefly after talking about taking his 24-year-old daughter and a son-in-law to the Capitol on January 6 and the terror the two felt when the attacks began. Raskin said they sheltered in an office with some Congressional aides—all of them “placing what they thought were their final texts and whispered phone calls to say their goodbyes—they thought they were going to die.” The room once again went silent.
