How will you be celebrating the Lunar New Year differently this year? Usually I’d invite some friends over to eat tteokguk and jeon, but this year I’ll just prepare it for my husband and me. I may gift myself some extra treats in an attempt to make myself feel better. Maybe some sweet rice cakes, little candies and fancy fruit.
What are some of the Lunar New Year traditions that you always stick to, and why? I don’t sweep the floor because I’ll take any excuse to not do chores, and because some superstitions stick when your mom yells them at you when you’re a kid. Tell me a little more about the dish you’ve chosen. Are there any quirks or tips to preparing it you want to share? My favorite Lunar New Year food is pineapple tarts. We used to live with my second aunt (二姨) and she would get my cousins, my sister, and I to help her with making her own pineapple tarts from scratch. So I guess the trick to delicious homemade pineapple tarts is child labor.
