While the new name of the team has not yet been revealed, Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera are reportedly working “to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans, and community for the next 100 years.” According to a report from the Washington Post, both Rivera and Snyder have already come up with two possible names for the team; they say they hope the new name will honor both Native American people and military organizations.
“Honestly, I never thought this day would come,” says Tania Larsson, a Gwich’in jeweler. “So many people have fought hard for decades to make this happen. I’m grateful to the Black Lives Matter movement for helping us make this day a reality.” For Larsson, the change is also bittersweet. “It’s important to remember that they are making this change due to financial pressure—not because it’s the right thing to do. Now, let’s get rid of the Edmonton Eskimos name.”
