Villanova won 66 to 64. Pandemonium broke out in the arena and Villanova’s coach Rollie Massimino, a short, almost perfectly round man whose hair was always unkempt and whose clothes never seemed to fit, bounded from player to player, until he was lifted up on their shoulders, all celebrating this unimaginable achievement. (Massimino died in 2017 at the age of 82.)
But then the game, held at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, was actually played. Villanova, the 8th seed (and still the lowest seed ever to win a championship) played a mix of zone defense and pick-and-roll offense that seemed to have thrown the Hoyas off-guard. And the team would make 22 of 29 field-goal attempts, a mind-boggling 79%, including nine of 10 in the second half, an almost impossible feat to pull off. As the game clock ticked off its final seconds, the Villanova senior forward Dwayne McClain stumbled to his knees on the floor of Rupp Arena, then tightly held the inbounds pass in his right arm and shot his left fist upward as time expired.
