This is a two-steps-forward-five-steps-backward kind of thing. But you can see how many young people are participating in the protests. And they are so happy. In the beginning, I was like, “Why they are dancing? This is a serious situation.” But they are dancing because it’s just a part of their youth. They are looking 20 years ahead. By then, they will be the leaders.
The protests have allowed people to share their knowledge of how to get an abortion. The telephone number for an advocacy group is everywhere. It’s on the buildings, it’s on the streets, it’s in the mainstream media, even on politicians’ T-shirts when they’re on public television. That’s what happened, and that was a huge barrier lifted. If you cannot reach people with information—that is the most frustrating thing. The second thing that happened is that people now know the legal side of things: It’s not a criminal act to have an abortion. It’s a criminal act in Poland to provide or help with an abortion.
