The decision comes just a few days after the 87-year-old team announced it was conducting a “thorough review” of its name. “That review has begun in earnest,” read a statement from the team, released this morning. “As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans, and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward. Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.”
The change is a long time coming, but is largely thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, which has gained momentum following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black Americans. The movement has sparked a global conversation about race, and put the heat on many organizations to rethink existing products or logos that are viewed as offensive. Outside of sports, the Aunt Jemima brand has been discontinued; Uncle Ben’s and Mrs. Butterworth’s are undergoing rebranding, too.
