How old are your sons? They’re seven and nine! They’re doing a mix of in-person and remote school right now, and I’m co-parenting with my ex-husband, so there are added hurdles. You’ve been in the news recently for the open letter you wrote urging Governor Cuomo to make food-delivery workers eligible for COVID-19 vaccines. How did that come about?** The letter was really a plea to the governor to consider those who have been forgotten for so long. It’s easy to think of law enforcement and our health professionals as frontline, essential workers—they are in every single crisis, which we unfortunately learned during 9/11. But there’s a different layer of workers on whom we have depended at a greater volume during this crisis. Whether you work at a grocery store or you deliver food…I noticed that grocery workers were included in the first tier of vaccine eligibility, but delivery workers were not, and I have to tell you, here in our district, we’re known for great food because of our diversity. Have you visited us?
Oh, yes. Nobody does food like Queens. Well, hopefully, we’ll be able to have you back soon! But I order food somewhat often, and I noticed that it was different delivery workers coming. In talking with my neighbors, I learned that we lost around 12 delivery workers to COVID-19 just here in my surrounding area. We don’t have actual data on how many delivery workers we have lost during this pandemic; I created a workplace-fatality registry in Albany, but it won’t be able to capture retrospective deaths. I also wanted to think about how we move through our days as New Yorkers, and I know that because of MTA closures, many more workers—especially night workers—are forced to use Uber and Lyft to get home safely, even though they can’t afford it. Yellow taxicabs have a physical partition, but Uber and Lyft cars don’t necessarily; they’re DIY, or it depends on the driver, so these folks don’t know if the person getting into their cab or opening the door for food is wearing a mask. It’s an airborne disease, and anything can happen.
