Myshirtone – Don’t Rush Me I’m Waiting For The Last Minute Procrastinate Shirt

In 2014, when Outkast had just gotten back together for a reunion tour to commemorate the duo’s 20th anniversary, André 3000’s jumpsuits got about as much attention as the music. Every night, he’d come out onstage with a different enigmatic, provocative, or political slogan written in bold white letters across his chest, everything from “across cultures, darker people suffer most. why?” to “make love like war” to “i don’t know what else to say.” “I live my life out onstage and everywhere else; I don’t necessarily have to tweet it out,” he told the Fader of the suits. “But I felt like it was cool that I could say crazy thoughts or fun stuff. And I think it actually gets more attention because it is what it is instead of tweeting it.”

Now, amid a social uprising, when slogans fly around our field of vision on protest placards and Instagram hashtags, when it’s never been more apparent that a powerful rally cry—Black Lives Matter—can amplify a movement, André 3000 has turned those jumpsuits into a collection of 13 slogan tees. The shirts, all long-sleeve and black with white lettering, are ethically made in Los Angeles from recycled cotton in partnership with Everybody.world. They’re now available on his official website, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Movement for Black Lives, which works to magnify black political power in America. “This is only one piece in the war against systemic racism. It takes all of us,” writes the musician on his site. “BLACK LIVES MATTER … at a minimum.”

When followers replied, criticizing the tweet as transphobic, Rowling doubled down in a thread, writing, “I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives”:

Rowling has a long history of so-called gender-critical commentary, best summarized in writer Katelyn Burns’s 2019 Vox story “J.K. Rowling’s transphobia is a product of British culture.” In the story, Burns points out that despite proclaiming herself in support of trans people, Rowling has liked tweets calling them “men in dresses” (Rowling’s team claimed it was an accident) and has repeatedly pushed forward a “sex is real” narrative that many trans activists and allies have pointed out as harmful.

The graduating classes of 2020 were robbed of their traditional commencement ceremonies: No marching up the the podium to collect their degrees while being cheered on by friends and families, no tossing of their caps into the air to mark the end of one life and the beginning of another.

As many queer people and allies finally begin to understand how Black trans activists shaped the modern LGBTQ+ movement, it’s crucial for us to understand what trans people are up against in the U.S., Britain, and across the world: While Rowling certainly has the right to express her opinions, it’s worth questioning how we center cisgender people’s responses to trans issues while still silencing trans voices systemically.

The injustices inherent in the fashion industry can no longer be glossed over; the bigger reckoning that the white-dominated establishment must face has become obvious. The student and graduate manifesto of 1 Granary, Demand Anti-Racist Education, was posted. “Multicultural education in universities is not enough. It makes us passive, thinking that knowing an issue exists is as good as doing something about it,” they wrote. “We should demand anti-racist education in schools, colleges, workplaces, and universities because we live in racist countries, towns, and communities. We should demand an education that addresses education directly. Demand this from your teachers, demand this from your parents, demand this from the institution you are in, demand this from yourself.”

Meanwhile, just as nobody really expected anyone to be able to make clothes during lockdown, some surprised by doing just that—but in ways that also militate towards change. Charles Jeffrey had a small Loverboy collection to show, and gave over his club night mini-event to black performers and graduate students Catherine Hudson and Halina Edwards in aid of U.K. Black Live Matters. Daniel Fletcher managed to get a collection ready to sell on his e-commerce site, using fabric he already had in his studio, with 10% of sales going to Black Lives Matter.

Her final words of advice to anyone who manages to get their hands on a classic Erika Jayne piece? “Wear them in good health, enjoy them, because I certainly did,” she adds, before laughing once again. “I most definitely enjoyed these clothes.”

That’s not to say, however, that she isn’t ready to pull out all the stops for the upcoming Housewives reunion, which this year will be taking place over Zoom. “Oh, of course we were able to pull it off,” she says. “My inspiration was Miami Vice, cocaine white.” “A little Michelle Pfeiffer Scarface moment?” I offer. “That’s right, honey, but I should add that we did it in our own way. I don’t want anybody to say I didn’t do it right. Bitch, I’m doing it for myself! Thank you.”

But on Sunday, they got something that no college graduates before them have experienced: commencement addresses and appearances by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry, among other celebrities—most notably Barack and Michelle Obama, the former president and first lady—in a multi-hour digital event livestreamed on YouTube Originals.

The “Dear Class of 2020” event got off to a rousing start with Lizzo playing “Pomp and Circumstance” on a flute, first solo, then accompanied digitally by members of the New York Philharmonic.

Courtesy of YouTube Originals When they go low, you can go high: “In an uncertain world, time-tested values like honesty and integrity, empathy and compassion— that’s the only real currency in life,” the former first lady said, obliquely referring to perhaps her best-known statement. “Treating people right will never, ever fail you. Now, I’m not naive. I know that you can climb a long way up the ladder selling falsehoods and blaming others for your own shortcomings, shunning those with less privilege and advantage. But that is a heavy way to live. It deadens your spirit and it hardens your heart. It may seem like a winning strategy in the short run, but trust me, graduates, that kind of life catches up to you. You rob yourself of the things that matter most—deep and loving connections with others, honest work that leads to lasting contributions to your community, the vibrancy that comes from a diversity of ideas and perspectives, the chance to leave this world a little better than you found it. Don’t deprive yourselves of all that. There is no substitute for it.”

You have a voice. Use it: “There will always be those who want to keep you silent, to have you be seen but not heard, or maybe they don’t even want to see you at all,” Michelle Obama said. “But those people don’t know your story, and if you listen to them, then nothing will ever change. So, it’s up to you to speak up when you or someone you know isn’t being heard. It’s up to you to speak out against cruelty, dishonesty, bigotry—all of it. It’s up to you to march hand in hand with your allies, to stand peacefully—with dignity and purpose—on the front lines in the fight for justice.”
